Clay Vessel Wines

Oak barrels and stainless steel tanks as well as cement eggs are new concepts for fermenting and aging wines. Thousands of years prior, wines were fermented and aged in clay vessels. While visiting the country Georgia, we have seen clay wine vessel that was 6,000 years old. That was a long time ago and the process of using clay vessels is making a small comeback. Making wine is qvevri (clay vessels from Georgia) is the only wine making method that is on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. In this Teach and Taste we will explore wines made in clay vessels. We will taste six wines that are perfect for cooler weather as the temperatures fall. The lineup will include wines from Georgia, Spain, Oregon and Maryland. We will taste three white and three red wines.

Weather permitting, this event will be held outdoors at the Sullivans’ home.
