Our Village

TVIH opened for membership in 2015 after two years of planning by an 11-member steering committee of Howard County residents led by Mary McGraw. It is a 501(c)3 organization. Donations are tax deductible. If you live in Howard County and are 55 or older, you are eligible for membership.

Like most aging-in-place villages, TVIH has an office, but its members live in their own homes. Member and nonmember volunteers provide services such as transportation to health-related appointments, grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, making minor home repairs, telephone check-ins, home visits and more, all of which support the goal of continuing to live in our homes as we age. See the become a volunteer for more information.

In addition to essential aging in place services provided by volunteers, members may sign up for events of interest on our Calendar, and also join one or more Village PODs. Both help build friendships and a sense of community. Members may also join Forums, which is our internal email message tool for posting content of interest and replying to posts.

Who we are

The Village In Howard (TVIH) is a member-based COMMUNITY of Howard County residents 55 and older who enjoy life and new friendships, who are willing to help each other, and who want to live independently in our homes and neighborhoods.

Our Calendar offers social, cultural and educational activities, and we welcome members and nonmembers to become volunteers who assist members in a variety of ways, including transportation to medical appointments, doing minor home repairs, helping with shopping and much more.

TVIH is part of the Village Movement”, which began when seniors in Boston volunteered to organize Beacon Hill Village more than 20 years ago. Publicity about the grassroots effort in Boston led to the movement taking root in many communities, including more than 70 in the DC metro area and Maryland who are members of the Washington Area Village Exchange.

Last year, The Village in Howard provided 576 wellness calls, 118 friendly visits, 359 transportation rides, 13 home maintenance repairs and 26 circle of care visits.  In addition, we offered 594 social, educational and health programs. Our 77 volunteers logged 7,927 hours.
