Welcome, all TVIH readers to our Tuesday afternoon Hooked on Books Zoom discussions,
held every other month. Each selection comes from suggested fiction/nonfiction titles
participants share at our Zoom meetings. After our group’s brief summer break, we voted
“Yes” to Susan Hailman’s pick for August 4, 2026: Alex North’s thriller,
The Man Made of Smoke.
Reviewers praise Alex North for his meticulous plotting and writing quality that attract a
broad audience. The Man Made of Smoke explores how people become worthy of our
understanding and empathy. And the author shows why our individual actions become
important, however trivial or innocent they may seem at the time. In this novel, North’s
central character is a criminal psychologist returning to his childhood home to confront
the past and find redemption. Free copies of The Man Made of Smoke (320 pages) are
available in Howard County’s Central Library and though Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited
program. Paid versions include Audible, hardback, and Kindle.

Description: A Book Club Discussion group that is interested in reading literary fiction, historical fiction, memoirs—books that will lend themselves to good discussions. We meet on the first Tuesday, every other month: February, April, June, August, October, December.
