About this event

Topic: Two Views of Iceland

Tour Guide: Dick Voelker, Kim and Jane Sherman

Dick Voelker: Iceland has between 70-100 earthquakes daily. If you spend a few days on the Island, you will definitely feel a tremor. In July 2023, Dick with his son and grandson toured the Island for 10 days doing a clockwise circuit of the Island. The range of weather conditions included snow on July 4 and basking in the sun a few days later on the south coast. They climbed volcanos over 2000 years old, hiked on glaciers, kayaked, and visited geothermal pools such as the Blue Lagoon for a delightful soak. Dick will present a 20-minute video of his family’s travels as well as pictures of his sampling some fabulous Icelandic beer at 11.5% alcohol by volume (most smooth).

Jane and Kim toured Iceland for 8 days in October of 2023 and went counterclockwise, if that makes a difference. They did some of the same things, and added a boat ride to see whales, and ice caves and lava caves explored in a much colder atmosphere. Their tour was in a small bus with 17 other passengers. October is a good month to see the Northern Lights from Iceland, but cloudy weather kept them from that experience. But the geysers and the joining of the continental tectonic plates of North America and Europe/Asia were phenomena that both they and Dick and his family experienced.
Jane and Kim will present some picture slides and a narrative of their experience.
