Today's topicVideo Memoir, Jeanette Kissel
Interviewer: Cathy Latham

My name is Jeanette Kissel. I was born in Women’s Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, New York
during the second world war. My mother lived in a Spanish speaking household with her parents and
her four siblings in an apartment two blocks from Central Park. Before I was born my father had joined
the Merchant Marine to support the war effort and had gone to sea. When I was two months old my
mother was notified that my father had been killed when his ship hit a mine and sunk.
In due course, my mother met a sailor on shore leave at a church dance. On the advice of a fortune
teller, my mother married him. When the war ended, we all moved to a farm in his home town in the
Missouri Ozarks.
We lived in a house without running water, indoor plumbing, and with coal fired stoves
for cooking and heating. And no-one spoke Spanish! What a huge change all this was for my mother and
me.

This is a new TVIH program on Zoom, modeled after the popular NPR program, Storycorps. A TVIH member is interviewed in a 40 min. session. The interview is recorded by a video camera.
Registrants of this Good Morning Howard Session and the person interviewed will watch the recorded interview together on Zoom. After viewing the interview, 20 minutes will be available for a Q&A session and discussions.

We have to remember our Memoir speakers aren’t speaking for us, but for future generations, telling the parts of life they want to be sure gets passed on.

Come to join us for our “Good Morning, Howard!”  zoom group.  We will be following the new schedule as listed below:

Wednesday at 9:00 AM

Our goal is to provide Howard County residents an opportunity to come together in a relaxed atmosphere, to meet with others, and to participate in the discussion/activities of Health and Wellness. Our content may include using technology to connect with family and friends, gardening, exercise, music, movies, jokes, popular websites, and healthy diet.

Participation is easy because driving is not required. This social program is for TVIH members and older adults from Howard County.

Volunteers (TVIH members) will take turns to serve as the hosts of the GMH zoom meetings.

Most people will join by using their computer, tablet or smartphone. To join, you need a zoom meeting link. The link will be emailed to you after you register.
