Host: Ruth Alice White
Today's topic: Affordable Housing in Howard County
Special Speaker: Dana Sohr, Deputy Director, Bridges to Housing Stability
While many residents of Howard County are comfortably housed and enjoying the rising market value of their homes, other residents are suffering from our county’s severe housing crisis. Our community hasn’t been building enough homes to keep pace with our expanding workforce. As a result, homes to buy or rent are getting scarcer every day - especially homes priced within reach of families earning the area median income or below. The result of the scarcity is an intense competition for both rentals and for-sale homes, which has driven up home prices and rents to levels that are unaffordable for many. Seniors on fixed pensions find that housing costs are rising faster than those pensions. People with disabilities can’t find affordable homes that fit their abilities. Young adults can’t afford to “launch” in Howard County and are forced to move elsewhere or continue living with their parents. And lower-wage members of our workforce, including teachers and other public sector workers, can’t afford to live in the community they serve. This presentation will dig further into these issues and offer opportunities to get involved. Presenter: Dana Sohr, deputy director of Bridges to Housing Stability and a member of the Steering Committee of the Housing Affordability Coalition of Howard County.
